Living fossils and conservation values

چکیده
Horseshoe crabs ( Limulus polyphemus ) have been in decline Long Island Sound, and recently there has discussion of whether the state Connecticut should stop issuing licenses for commercial harvesting. This paper argues that spite concerns about living fossil concept, fact horseshoe are fossils count favor more stringent protection. The distinguishes four different views status concept: 1) eliminativism; 2) redefinition; 3) reframing; 4) conceptual pluralism. Approaches 2–4 all treat criteria associated with as picking out distinctive features evolutionary history. Those history link up conservation values several ways. More generally, drawing upon relevant work environmental philosophy, it is argued to aesthetic value. Moreover, eliminativists trouble rendering intelligible a striking pattern recent scientific literature. Researchers undertaking conservation-relevant frequently highlight taxa under study.

Acidophilic Collembola: living fossils?
The existence of two groups of acidophilic (mostly present in soils at pH less than 5) and acidintolerant Collembolan species has been demonstrated concurrently by several authors in the course of biocoenotic studies. The examination of morphological features points to a strong relationship between acidophily and hypothetical phyletic relationships between both groups. In the light of Earth his...

متن کاملSpecies distributions, land values, and efficient conservation
Efforts at species conservation in the United States have tended to be opportunistic and uncoordinated. Recently, however, ecologists and economists have begun to develop more systematic approaches. Here, the problem of efficiently allocating scarce conservation resources in the selection of sites for biological reserves is addressed. With the use of county-level data on land prices and the inc...
